Vodafone have officially confirmed that they will be switching on their 5G network in the UK on July 3 2019. The new, faster network service will be available for consumers and business customers in seven cities across the UK.
You’ll of course need a 5G-compatible phone to benefit from the service, but the good news is that Vodafone have confirmed they’ll be pricing 5G at the same price as their 4G plans. The first 5G smartphone goes on sale next week which will be the Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 5G, with the 5G version of the Samsung Galaxy S10 expected to follow soon after.
EE have also confirmed that they will be launching 5G this year, but Vodafone are the first network to confirm a specific launch date.
The seven cities that will initially be getting Vodafone 5G are:
- Birmingham
- Bristol
- Cardiff
- Glasgow
- Manchester
- Liverpool
- London
Vodafone UK CEO Nick Jeffery said: “We started our 5G journey more than three years ago. We led the way in setting 5G standards to ensure phones and networks work well together. We upgraded our masts to be able to take 5G without disruption. And we were the first UK company to test 5G over our all-fibre core fixed and mobile network.
“This is important. It means we can today announce the largest launch of 5G in the UK and be the first to announce 5G roaming. It means that UK businesses can lead the world in adopting 5G to boost productivity and attract investment. It means consumers can get the fastest mobile speeds ever, and it means that our public sector will be able to adopt new services to improve healthcare, social services and housing.”
5G will bring faster mobile internet speeds to the UK, but will also allow for improved network performance in busy areas such as cities, stadiums and festivals. This means that you’re less likely to experience slow down in busy places.
In addition to the seven cities that will receive 5G in the initial roll-out, Vodafone is planning to extend the network to another twelve locations before the end of the year:
- Birkenhead
- Blackpool
- Bournemouth
- Guildford
- Newbury
- Portsmouth
- Plymouth
- Reading
- Southampton
- Stoke-on-Trent
- Warrington
- Wolverhampton
Even if you’re not in a 5G area but have a 5G phone, your phone will still function as it can use the 4G network in non-5G areas. Priceplans will be unveiled in full next week and we’ll have all the details here at Direct Mobiles.
