Feature-packed with plenty of fan-favourite features

Sony recently unveiled their latest flagship phone, and whilst there aren’t many surprises, it’s likely to a favourite for fans of the brand.  Sony’s technology expertise is vast and long spanning so it is no surprise that their smartphones tend to be feature packed. One of Sony’s biggest strengths is photography, specifically their range of Alpha camera products. These cameras are famous for their photo quality and high speed performance, so guess what? They have popped them inside their smartphones too.  The latest Sony Xperia 1 V boasts a new stacked, backside-illuminated (BSI) camera sensor aimed at content creators and a Type 1/1.35-inch (about 12mm diagonally) ‘Exmoor T for Mobile’ sensor, designed to work with AI photography.  An ultrawide 12 MP (megapixel) camera and 85-125mm 12-megapixel optical telephoto zoom are also included in the setup.

Say cheese

If you’re a traditional SLR camera user then you’ll be pleased to know there are plenty of professional mode setting available which allow for full manual control. A favourite of these being Photography Pro which also allows live streaming. Sony also claim the new Xperia 1 V offers double the low-light performance of the previous Xperia 1 IV model.  In addition, the Product Showcase setting found on Sony’s pro-grade vlogging cameras (e.g. ZV-EI) is now available on the smartphone which promises improved skin tone capture thanks to a new sensor.

A new voice priority mic placed near the rear camera now also picks up voices over background rabble, just like a pro camera crew set up. For the video content creators, the new Xperia can also be used as a monitor for some Sony Alpha cameras.  You can also control settings and record content to the phone and its mic can capture sound while monitoring audio via the Xperia 1 V’s headphone jack (remember those?).

Other high-end tech includes a Snapdragon 8 Gen2 processor, a 6.5-inch 4K 120Hz OLED HDR display, a decent-size 5,000 mAh battery that allows for up to 20 hours of continuous 4K playback and 12GB of RAM.  That processor and level of RAM is going to be more than enough for running most mobile apps.  Memory card fans will also be pleased to know that expandable storage is also supported.

Game on

You may be familiar with the Sony PlayStation that launched in 1995 (or 1994 if you live in Japan), several years before the first smartphone, so you can rest assured that Sony know a bit about gaming. They are including a Game Enhancer function in the Xperia 1 V that provides  ‘best in class’ visual and auditory support and allows gamers to livestream game directly to YouTube.

If this all sounds a touch too complex (and pricey) for you, there is also a more mainstream, lower spec version of the phone, in the form of the Xperia 10 V. This model is powered by a Snapdragon 695 chipset and offers a 6.1-inch 1080p OLED display with a refresh rate of 60Hz. The camera set up here includes a main 48-megapixel Type-1/2.0-inch sensor with a wide lens, along with a 2x telephoto and an ultrawide lens.
