Twice a year, Samsung unveil their latest creations in the smartphone, tablet and wearables markets, so what did they have in their pack at the most recent 2023 event in South Korea?

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5

Following on from the success of the Galaxy Z Flip 4 in 2022, Samsung revealed their latest foldable phone evolution which tackled a significant design issue and enhanced other key features on the device. As a bit of background, the Z Flip series is the clamshell foldable which, although a premium device, is less expensive, smaller and slightly less feature packed than the Fold. It is the more portable of the two and packs down to a square with an external screen on which you can still get a lot done.

As it is a flip phone, it benefits from having two screens – one that works more like a smartwatch for notifications and basic functions, and one that functions more like a tablet.  The external screen size is one of the main upgrades offered with the Z Flip 5 and has increased significantly from 1.9 inches to 3.4 inches. New widgets are also available for the external screen including contacts, calendar, stocks and now playing.

The larger inner screen remains the same size as the Z Flip 4 at 6.7 inches. Another improvement is the actual design of the phone which now folds perfectly flat without that little gap by the hinge. The Galaxy Z Flip 4 had a noticeable gap in its foldable clamshell design which was a bit of a faux pas and needed to be addressed. This makes the device significantly slimmer without compromising on one its greatest features – IPX8 water resistance – which is still a rarity in the foldable phone space.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5

The Z Fold 5 upgrades are less noticeable that what we see on the Flip 5, but still significant as it also benefits from the fold flat technology that Samsung have engineered to deal with the noticeable gap it had before, which was a particle and dust trap. As a result, the Flip 5 is 2.4 mm thinner than its predecessor and is 25% more durable. Although there are no significant changes to the external screen like the Z Flip 5, it is brighter and supports the use of the S-Pen stylus.

Galaxy Tab S9

The latest additions to Samsung’s tablet line all benefit from improved water resistance and all of them – the Tab S9, S9 Plus and S9 Ultra – boast the powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset under the hood, AMOLED displays, stylus support and 5G options. The main differentiator between the models is the screen size, ranging from 11 inches to 14.6 inches. They also have advanced Android software that allow them to double up as a laptop that can be connected to external monitors complete with optional keyboard and case accessories. The S9 series also benefits from improved cinematic audio and enhanced speakers.

Galaxy Watch 6

Two new smartwatches were also announced at the Unpacked event; the Watch 6 and the Watch 6 Classic. Both are made of aluminium, have larger displays, slimmer bezels, faster processors and better battery life than the 5 series.

The Watch 6 comes in four sizes and marks the return of the rotating bezel on the Classic version.  There is also a quick release strap and next-generation Wear OS 4 software with at least five years of software updates promised.

For the Watch 6, you can choose from two sizes: 40mm and 44mm. The 40mm model comes in Graphite and Silver colours, and the 44mm version is available in Graphite and Gold. For the Watch 6 Classic, the sizes are 43mm and 47mm and both sizes are available in either Black or Silver
