iD Mobile, the UK mobile provider that runs on Three and is owned by Currys, now has 2 million customers, adding 488,000 new subscribers in the last 12 months.
iD is an MVNO, which means it runs on another network – in this case Three. They tend to promote themselves as a value, low-cost network, promoting 1 month rolling SIM only plans, but in recent years have also introduced 12 and 24 month plans, as well as pay monthly mobile phone contracts.
Rohit Vedi, iD Mobile’s big boss said “Reaching two million subscribers is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our team. Our success has been driven by enhancements to our service and proposition, our strong partnership with Three UK, and the advantages of being part of the Currys Group.
“We’re focused on delivering top value and the latest technology to our customers as we continue to push the boundaries of excellence. In a highly competitive MVNO landscape, iD Mobile’s continued growth signals increased pressure on legacy carriers, highlighting a shift in consumer priorities toward affordability and flexibility in mobile services”.
Currys inherited iD Mobile when it bought Carphone Warehouse a few years ago, and has continued to grow and promote it, despite some Currys investors asking for it to be sold off.
If Three and Vodafone eventually merge (which is looking more and more likely), it will be interesting to see if iD Mobile can continue to offer such heavy discounts, or whether the new Three and Vodafone company will look to increase prices.
Either way, more MVNO’s in the market is good for all us customers as it means more competition and more options.
