It’s their second foldable phone, boasting an improved screen and revamped folding mechanism

The Huawei Mate X2 has been officially unveiled by the Chinese manufacturer – it’s definitely at the top end of the price range for phones, coming in at approximately £2,000.

There’s no official UK release date for the device yet, but it’s launching into selected markets from February 25th 2021. As with most new Huawei phones, there are no Google services on the device, with Huawei instead opting for it’s own Harmony OS software.

The foldable phone has an 8″ display when unfolded and a 6.45″ front screen.

The outer display comes with a 21:9 aspect ratio, while unfolded it has a ratio of 8:7.1, and screen resolution of 2,200 by 2,480 pixels.

It comes with a quad-camera set up and is powered by a Kirin 9000 5G chipset with a screen refresh rate is 90Hz, so not quite the 120Hz we’re seeing on some flagships but hey, you can’t have it all.

The quad-camera is powered by Leica and includes a 50MP super sensing wide camera, 12MP telephoto camera, 8MP periscope telephoto and 16MP ultrawide lens.

As with many Huawei flagship, camera zoom is a standout feature and the Mate X2 supports 10x optical zoom, 20x hybrid zoom and 100x digital zoom.

Round the front there is a 16MP selfie camera and video is recorded at 1080p at 30fps.

Huawei will launch the Mate X2 in four different colours; white, black, crystal blue and crystal pink.

The foldable phone also includes 8GB of RAM, a 4,500mAh battery, fast charging (55w) and dual SIM.  256GB and 512GB memory options will be available.

Will it come to the UK? Who knows, but it’s good to see foldable screen technology continue to evolve. I have a feeling we’re going to see this tech become mainstream on a number of flagship smartphone models over the next couple of years – the price of the technology will eventually drop to make it more accessible to more people.
