Everything Announced at Samsung Unpacked 2020: Galaxy S20, Z Fold, 5G & More

So What Was Actually Unpacked At The Samsung Event?

It is getting increasingly challenging for tech giants to convince you to upgrade so they are under pressure to create new smartphone features and designs.

Samsung’s Unpacked Event took place this week where they unveiled the much-leaked Samsung Galaxy S20 series which included four new flagship handsets, the jump to 5G and

The key highlights from the event were as follows:

  • Not one, not two but THREE new Samsung Galaxy S20 smartphones ALL with 5G and one with 100x super zoom. The fact that they jumped from the S10 to the S20 is apparently to celebrate the fact that we are in a new decade.
  • The Samsung Galaxy S20, S20 Plus and S20 Ultra are your three choices with the S20 also be available in a 4G-only variant.
  • Galaxy Buds+ which are wireless headphones to rival the Apple Airpods
  • The Galaxy Z Flip which is Samsung’s new foldable phone with an impressive 6.7-inch folding screen
  • A new partnership with Netflix as ‘Samsung’s entertainment partner’ which will give users access to exclusive content based on Netflix originals

The Phones

The Samsung Galaxy S20 will start at £799 or £899 for the 5G version with the ‘all bells and whistles’ model coming in at £1,399. Although more people are choosing to buy their phones SIM Free, most will purchase these on a pay monthly network contract.

This pricing is roughly in line with the Apple iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro which will deter a lot of Samsung fans who may be forced to the more mid-range Samsung devices as a result – it’s worth noting though that the still-amazing Samsung Galaxy S10 from 2019 has just had a massive price drop.

The new phones come with under-screen ultrasonic fingerprint scanners and facial recognition like the Galaxy S10 so you can unlock your phone with finger or your face, unlike the latest iPhone which only uses facial recognition (or as old-school key code).

Excitingly all three models are available as ‘5G ready’ too which will eventually offer speeds up to 10x times faster than 4G for the user when available. Samsung recognise though that 5G isn’t of interest to everyone just yet, so they released a 4G version of the S20 too.

Samsung are holding up the Galaxy S20 Ultra as the phone for photographers too as they know how much we love to upload top quality snaps to social media. These smartphones are also able to capture 8K video footage although only real video experts would probably be able to notice the difference from 4K, unless you’re playing back your video on a nice big 8K TV.

The Ultra also has an incredible zoom which they call the ‘Space Zoom’ which uses a combination of optical, digital and AI to zoom in on your subject 100x!  There is also an insane amount of RAM available which is superfast memory designed to store data on all the programs and apps that you have open to allow for quicker multi-tasking.

The Buds

The Galaxy Buds have some attractive features including 3 built-in mics for making calls in crowded areas, two speakers in each bud and enhanced ambient sound so you can be more aware of your surrounding as required. They also work with an iPhone or iPad which is an intelligent and enterprising stroke of genius from Samsung.

The Flip

The Galaxy Z Flip is an improvement on the Galaxy Fold as it has a ‘hideaway hinge’ which prevents dust and debris getting in.

It comes with free access to YouTube Premium which figures as Samsung is positioning this product as the device for binge-watchers who will adore the size of the screen when unfolded.

Are folding phones the future?  That depends on us lot, do we need them? Samsung certainly seem to think so as do Motorola.

It’s early days for the tech though but it is improving, with Samsung claiming that the Z Fold’s hinge is good for at least 200,000 open / closes.
