World-first as EE confirm they will launch the OnePlus 5G smartphone
EE were the first network in the UK to launch 4G and in 2019 they want to repeat the achieivement with 5G. A 5G network is going to need a range of 5G-compatible smartphones though, so manufacturers are gradually dropping hints or official announcements of their 5G launches for 2019.
Today, that announcement comes from OnePlus, who have confirmed that EE will be first network in the world to launch the OnePlus 5G smartphone.
Announced at the Qualcomm summit event in Hawaii (nice for some), EE and OnePlus are working together to help ensure the best possible 5G experience for customers.
Marc Allera, CEO of BT’s Consumer division, said: “EE and OnePlus have a shared vision: to give our customers the best connected experience possible. We’re working together on cutting edge technology to deliver that, and we’re leading the world on the journey to 5G. Adding 5G to the UK’s number one 4G network will increase reliability, increase speeds, and keep our customers connected where they need it most. We have an ambition to connect our customers to 4G, 5G or Wi-Fi 100% of the time.”
Pete Lau, CEO and founder of OnePlus, said at the event, “The pursuit of speed has defined the OnePlus DNA since OnePlus was founded five years ago. There’s no one more suitable than OnePlus to make a 5G smartphone. Our users are always eager to try new things and they are now ready to experience the next generation of connectivity and speed. In response, OnePlus has poured efforts into 5G research since 2016. Today, we stand poised to embrace the dawn of 5G.”
OnePlus 5G?
Exactly what the OnePlus 5G smartphone will look like and feature is still to be officially announced, but OnePlus have said they want to keep it at under $1000 (£785). We expect the removal of ‘notches’ that have been so prominent on this year’s smartphone releases to be one of the key design ambitions for the likes of OnePlus, Samsung, Apple, Honor and Huawei next year. With a 5G network, hardware speed is also likely to be a focus as they look to promote how much stuff you can get done on your phone. And let’s not forget, the battle of the cameras will rage on with Samsung and Huawei already rumoured to be lining up six-lens cameras on their next flagship launches.
5G is arriving in 2019
EE have already confirmed they are launching 5G in 16 UK cities in 2019 and you can check here to see if your city is on the list. 5G is currently being trialled in Canary Wharf, London as well as in their state-of-the-art test lab in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire.
