Includes a virtual tutor to help children learn English
Baidu controls China’s search engine market, is developing fast in the artificial intelligence space and it’s smart speaker division has now launched its own smartphone.
Led by billionaire, Robin Li, Baidu plans launched the smartphone at its headquarters in Beijing through their Xiaodu ecosystem which is best known for its smart speakers as well as earphones, tablets and televisions. Symbiotically, Xiaodu’s Alexa-style smart speaker is powered by Baidu’s DuerOS system as the smartphone aims to be seamless addition to their existing hardware.
Xiaodu says the new phone includes an AI-powered tutor that can help children with tasks such as working on school assignments and practicing English speaking. The device can also scan essays or homework and offer suggestions on how to improve the writing.
“The emergence of generative AI and large language models (LLMs) presents transformative potential for AI in various industries,” Baidu chief executive Robin Li Yanhong said in a call with analysts.
The market for smart tech targeted at children is a fast-growing segment in China, especially as parents look for tools and help in improving their childs’ education and performance at school.
The Xiaodu phone, called Qinghe, also features parental controls to limit time spent in specific apps and track the user’s location, and even if the child is using the phone lying down and should be asleep.
