Apple’s iPhone 15 Event is Tonight, Here’s What to Expect

New iPhone models on the way and more

The flagship product will no doubt be the new iPhone 15 Pro, along with Apple Watch and AirPod updates.

September already?  It must be, as Apple have confirmed their next product launch event, this time entitled ‘Wonderlust’.  The event kicks off at 6pm on Tuesday September 12th 2023, and the tech giant is expected to unveil it’s latest annual update of iPhone models, plus upgraded versions of their Apple Watch and AirPod lines.  We’ll no doubt also hear about some of the new features that have already been confirmed for iOS 17, the iPhone’s operating system.

Will there be any more VR headset surprises at this event – unlikely, as Apple will want the global press coverage focus to be primarily on their smartphone range.  iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods generate around 60% of Apple’s total revenue so their success is a priority.

iPhone 15 series

This is the headline product. iPhone 15 will likely appear in four different variants – iPhone 15 (standard), iPhone 15 Plus (bigger screen), iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max (upgraded cameras and some other powerful features for photographers).  The iPhone 15 and 15 Plus are expected to feature aluminium sides and a glass back, just like the 14 series.  The 15 Pro and Pro Max are where the big upgrades are expected to happen, with a shift to a titanium casing, plus slightly larger displays and a reduced bezel – all this is likely to help justify a price increase for the Pro models this year, compared to the 14 Pro series in 2022.

The standard iPhone 15 and 15 Plus models are expected to cost around the same as the 14 series last year, but will now benefit from the Dynamic Island notifications bar that was exclusive to the Pro models in 2022.

All models are expected to receive camera upgrades – it’s likely that the standard 15 models will include much of the camera tech from the 14 Pro series, whilst the 15 Pro series will benefit from further camera upgrades – see the annual pattern forming here?

If you’re a fan of the silence/mute button on your iPhone, be prepared to say farewell to it, as it is rumoured that the switch will be disappearing from the iPhone 15 series, in favour of a new ‘action’ button that can be customised to act as a shortcut for popular functions such as opening the camera, turning on the torch, etc.  And hopefully still as a mute button for those that want it.

Finally, we should see USB-C become the standard charging / connectivity port on the iPhone, mainly thanks to a new EU ruling that states it has to have one to be sold in most of Europe. This will no doubt please and annoy iPhone users in equal measure, but let’s face it, the lightning port / connection is flimsy, slow and outdated so we’re all for it here at Direct Mobiles.

Apple Watch

We’ll see upgraded Apple Watch models but don’t expect anything too revolutionary.  No doubt a new processor will be revealed to help the popular smartwatch run faster and more efficiently.

Apple AirPods

Like iPhone, Airpods will also start to make the move to USB-C, although perhaps not immediately. Expect confirmation on this all at the event – the latest AirPod Pro’s are likely to be the first to support USB-C charging.

We’ll have all the latest iPhone 15 info right here, plus info on pre-orders and pricing.  As usual we’ll no doubt see some nice reductions on the current iPhone models, and if you’re looking to sell your current iPhone then here are the best places to sell it.
