We may have to wait until September this year to see the new iPhone, expected to be called the iPhone 6, make its debut. The long wait doesn’t, of course, stop the endless rumours, speculation and leaks which are published on an almost daily basis as to what the new iPhone will look like and what features it will boast. Let’s take a look at the most credible rumours.
Will there be one or more new iPhone models? As well as the eagerly anticipated iPhone 6, we’re also expecting to see a brand new iPhone phablet which is thought to come with a 5.5-inch screen with a full HD 1920 x 1080 pixel display giving it a density of 401 ppi. The iPhone phablet is also expected to be powered by an A8 processor and a much larger battery than any other iPhones currently sport. It’s thought that the new Phablet handset might not be launched until the end of this year.
As for the ‘normal-sized’ iPhone 6, it’s likely we’ll see a more radical redesign of the smartphone than we have done in recent years. The latest reports point to a possible screen size of around 4.7-inches with pared back bezels on the sides of the phone which could be up to 20% smaller than previously. And it’s expected to be significantly slimmer than the iPhone 5s – maybe as slim as 7mm in depth. The bigger Retina display has been rumoured to come with a resolution of 1334 x 750 which would give it a pixel density of 326 ppi.
The new iPhone 6 is expected to feature the Touch ID fingerprint sensor and it’s been widely reported that Apple are planning on changing their screens to the tougher Sapphire Crystal from Gorilla Glass. Some of the more recent speculation raises the possibility that the Touch ID may be moved away from the home button into the main display and that the power button may be moved onto the side.
The iPhone 6 is also likely to feature the new A8 processor alongside 1GB of RAM. The A8 chip could potentially provide increased power and efficiency of around 30% and will boast a 64-bit quad-core processor.
The camera specs are still very much up for debate with rumours that Apple will go with an 8-megapixel rear camera but with upgraded features and functions.
