We’re counting down the days until the shiny new iPhone 6 is revealed to the world in a few weeks time. On September the 9th, Apple will be unveiling one of their most eagerly anticipated iPhones of recent years. Here’s how we’re expecting the iPhone 6 to compare to last year’s iPhone 5s.
First up is the design. It’s thought that Apple are going to making some fairly significant changes to the design of their latest iPhone handsets with two new iPhone 6 models likely to be launched in the next few months. It’s very likely that the iPhone 6 will be slimmer and lighter in weight than the iPhone 5s. We could also see the Apple logo moved to the rear of the iPhone 6 with some reports indicating that the logo could be illuminated. The new handset is likely to be curvier with gently rounded edges which would bring it in line with the iPad Air and the latest iPod Touch design. There has been much speculation regarding the inclusion of Sapphire Glass in the screen thanks to its super tough and scratch resistant properties but with long manufacturing times it may not be ready for the smaller of the two iPhone 6 models which is expected to be available in stores by the end of September.
There have been endless rumours concerning the screen size of the iPhone 6. Traditionally most previous iPhone models have sported a 4-inch display however the iPhone 6 is set to change this with not one but two new handsets which will both feature a larger screen. The smaller of the two iPhone 6’s is expected to boast a 4.7-inch display and the larger new handset is likely to come with a 5.5-inch phablet sized screen. If this is the case, the 4.7-inch iPhone could well boast a screen resolution in excess of 500 pixels per inch which is a big upgrade on the 326ppi which the iPhone 5s offers.
We’re also likely to see some top end specs on the iPhone 6 which will certainly be a step up from those seen in the iPhone 5s. The iPhone 5s came with an A7 processor whereas the iPhone 6 is thought to include an A8 processor. There are reports that the A8 chip will provide greater battery efficiency and together with an expected bigger battery, the iPhone 6 should have far superior battery power than any previous iPhone handsets. The iPhone 5s had 1GB of RAM so this is another area which the iPhone 6 is expected to be upgraded, there have also been rumours that the new iPhone could be charged wirelessly could feature an NFC chip and there could be a 128GB version. Some features of the iPhone 5s such as the Touch ID fingerprint sensor and the M7 co-processor are anticipated to be kept for the iPhone 6.
The iPhone 6 will be all set to run on the revamped and upgraded iOS 8 operating system. Apple have already released details on many of the new iOS 8 features such as Healthkit, Apple’s very own hi-tec health and fitness monitoring and tracking software. Other new iOS 8 features will include better predictive texting, new interactive notifications, an upgraded Group Messaging service and a camera time lapse mode.
There’s been some debate on what type of camera we could see on the iPhone 6. Both the iPhone 5s and iPhone 4s featured an 8-megapixel camera and it’s expected that the iPhone 6 will come with an upgraded rear camera, possibly a 13-megapixel version which can record video in 4k resolution. The camera software is also likely to be up dated with some additional extras such as image stabilisation.
