Want to spend less time on your phone? Ironically, there’s an app for that.

Smartphones are amazing. They can act as our own personal assistant throughout life, keep us connected with others socially and help us to build up a photo library of treasured memories. The problem is, they can also often become overwhelming and can distract us from what is happening in real life. We can occasionally find ourselves living life through our mobile phone rather than actually enjoying the moment that we’re in. With this in mind, we’ve been taking a look at some of the apps that can use to help you foster a healthier relationship with your phone:

1. Space

Space is available on the iPhone and Android devices. It follows your phone usage through the day and lets you set goals for phone usage. It also shows you how often you unlock your phone and how long you use your phone for each day. This is a great tool if you like to challenge yourself because you set the goal of keeping that addiction score as low as you possibly can.

2. Flipd

Those asking ‘how do I limit my smartphone usage?’ might well be looking for a more aggressive approach and Flipd certainly provides that. Available on both iOS and Android, this app actually locks your phone for set periods, as dictated by you. Once it’s set, that’s it. You really won’t be able to use your phone, even restarting it won’t work. If you feel you are likely to cheat, this might well be the app for you because there really is no way of getting around it.

3. StayOnTask

Much of the problem with smartphones is that they can be so distracting. We often find ourselves going on them to answer an important email or check our finances yet then find ourselves chatting to friends on WhatsApp or scrolling through Facebook. StayOnTask is an app available to Android users that regularly issues prompts to check that you are actually on task. For some, it’s a great way to redirect focus and for others, it’s just a bit of a kick up the bum to make sure you are doing what you actually need to be doing!
