If you prefer your smartphone pocket-sized then there’s good news from Sony. They have just unveiled the Sony Xperia Z1 compact which you have probably guessed is a smaller version of the high-spec Sony Xperia Z1. We take a look at the Z1 Compact and how it compares to its larger sibling.

Not everyone wants a super-sized handset and let’s face it, those larger phones can be pretty darn uncomfortable wedged in your front pocket! If you don’t want to sacrifice functionality but need something a bit smaller then the Xperia Z1 Compact could be the answer.

The Z1 Compact has a similar design and feel to the original Z1 but features a 4.3-inch 720 resolution (341 ppi) touchscreen compared to the 5-inch full HD Xperia Z1. The great selling point for the Z1 Compact is that it still offers high specification functionality which is often not the case when smartphones are scaled down into a smaller version of popular handsets.

The Sony Xperia Z1 Compact is come in a choice of 4 colours including black, white, pink and lime. It also packs in a fair bit of power with a 2.2GHz Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor and 2GB of RAM. It also provides a decent amount of onboard storage at 16GB which can be increased up to the usual 64GB with the use of a microSD card. Although the battery at 2300mAh is less powerful than the Z1, because of the smaller and lower res screen, it should provide comparable battery life.

The Z1 Compact’s camera is a very impressive 20.7-megapixel like the full-sized Z1. Due to the camera size and other specs packed into this little powerhouse, the Z1 Compact measures 1mm thicker at 9.5mm and weighs just under 140grams. The Z1 Compact also boasts the same robustness as the Z1 with a shatterproof and scratch resistant screen as well as being dust proof and water resistant.

The Sony Xperia Z1 Compact is expected to be available from February this year so watch this space for prices.
