Google’s launch of their new Nexus 5 took some by surprise as it was unveiled without the usual months of rumour and speculation and was available to buy the very next day. If its debut was understated, then the handset itself certainly isn’t as it offers some top notch features for a very competitive price. Let’s give you the lowdown on the Nexus 5.
Available in a black or white handset, Google’s Nexus 5 went on sale at the beginning of this month. It’s already attracting a fair bit of attention thanks to its super fast performance and its impressive True HD IPS touchscreen which has a resolution of 1080 x 1920 which gives it a clarity of 445 ppi. The Nexus 5’s screen is a generous 4.95-inches but looks bigger due to the thin bezels which surround it. It’s protected with Gorilla Glass 3 and has a stylish and lightweight design.
Google’s Nexus 5 smartphone is one of the first to use the newest Android operating system, KitKat 4.4. The Android KitKat 4.4 operating system has seen a significant revamp with Google at the heart of it with the full integration of Google Now which anticipates your search requests and keeps you updated with weather, traffic and news wherever you are. One great feature of KitKat is Google Now’s ‘OK Google’ which enables you to make calls, send texts or search Google by simply telling your smartphone what you require it to do. The Android OS has also had a design make-over and offers some great new features including an Advanced Photo editing suite, better visuals for games and apps and is more battery and memory efficient which enables it to run so much faster than Android Jellybean.
As well as benefitting from the uber efficient KitKat 4.4, the Nexus 5 is powered by the latest Snapdragon 800 2.3GHz quad-core processor combined with 2GB of RAM so it literally zips along. There’s no microSD slot but the option of 16GB or 32GB of built-in memory should be plenty big enough for most.
In terms of camera, the Nexus 5 has an 8-megapixel camera on the back and a 1.3-megapixel camera on the front. The rear camera comes with optical image stabilisation, a HDR shooting mode, Panorama and Photo Sphere. You can also record video at 1080p.
