OnePlus unveiled their new cut-price flagship; the OnePlus 7 Pro, at a packed event in London. Talk about brand loyalty, fans of the brand had actually paid for tickets to attend the event, alongside media and members of the mobile industry.
OnePlus’ unique selling point to date has been launching premium spec phones to compete directly with Apple and Samsung, but at a much lower price. The introduction of the OnePlus 7 Pro is meant as a direct alternative to the pricier Samsung Galaxy S10+, iPhone XS and Huawei P30 Pro. It’s not quite as much of a bargain as the OnePlus 6T was at launch, but at £649, it beats the flagship price point of it’s competitors by quite a bit.
The OnePlus 7 Pro is their biggest phone yet, it packs a giant 6.67 inch QHD+ AMOLED display which covers the entire front of the device and curves round the edge like the S10 or P30 Pro. There’s no notch and no punch hole for the front camera as they’ve hidden that away inside the phone itself (more on that later).
The screen has what OnePlus claim ‘the best display’ available on a mobile phone. It has a 90Hz refresh rate which means video and games look super-smooth on the display. Even apps scroll more smoothly. Inside there’s a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor, which is apparently 45% faster than the 6T’s Snapdragon 845. Fast-charging is supported using OnePlus’ Warp Charge technology which can give you a day’s power in about 20 minutes. On the subject of battery power, the 7 Pro packs a 4000mAh battery which is on the bigger side of mobile batteries so you get plenty of juice.
There are three different versions of the OnePlus 7 Pro available, with 6GB, 8GB or 12GB of RAM, depending on how much you need. RAM allows you to have more apps running simultaneously with 12GB being three times the amount the Google Pixel 3 has.
The OnePlus 7 Pro is the world’s first phone to use the new UFS 3.0 storage standard. In simple-speak, that means the 128GB or 256GB of storage (depending on the model you choose) should be twice as fast as any other phone on the market – that means you should notice the difference even when using the phone for social media, flicking through menus, taking photos and listening t to music.
Under the screen is a fingerprint scanner which unlocks your phone faster than last year’s 6T. The phone also includes face recognition unlocking which takes on average 0.21 seconds, making it the fastest on the market.
Pop-up selfies
Hidden inside the phone is the 16 megapixel front-facing selfie-camera. This electronically slides up from the top of the phone when you need it. It’s pretty quick and if you’re worried about it being fragile, OnePlus tested the mechanism 300,000 times, the equivalent of 150 times a day for five and a half years. OnePlus have even posted a 12 hour long video on their YouTube channel if you’d like to watch the camera popping up and down for that long (don’t).
Round the back is the triple-lens camera system. It includes a 48 megapixel main camera, 16 megapixel ultra-wide angle lens and an 8 megapixel 3x telephone camera. At the event we got to see some seriously impressive photos taken on the camera by the team at National Geographic magazine. This camera can definitely hold it’s own against the Huawei P30 Pro and Samsung S10+, although which is the true winner will remain to be seen after some more extensive testing.
EE were also at the event to announce that they will have an exclusive 5G version of the OnePlus 7 Pro later in the year. The exact launch date for the 5G version is still to be confirmed but expect it to cost a bit more than the 4G version, and of course you’ll need a 5G plan which aren’t available yet. Unless you’re really desperate to wait for 5G, we think the 4G version available this month is the better choice now.
The OnePlus 7 Pro will be available in three colours costing £649 for 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, £699 for 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage or £799 for 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage.
