Netflix to adapt Roald Dahl stories for TV.
‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’, ‘The BFG’ and ‘The Twits’ are all still magnetising tales for children of every generation and Netflix sure seems to know it’s ‘trogglehumpers’ from it’s ‘quogwinkles’ as it soldiers on with it’s multimillion pound content shopping spree. The media streaming giant has announced that it will be turning the much-loved Roald Dahl books into TV shows.
Children’s content is one of the area’s that Netflix has identified as ‘ripe for expansion’ with Hulu, Amazon and Apple all frantically trying to steal a piece of the pie. A big, friendly giant is approaching however, at the end of 2019, in the form of Disney+ which, according to several experts in the field, will swoop easily into the top three video streaming services.
Netflix is already hailed as a market leader in captivatingly high-quality storytelling (you may have heard of Black Mirror and Bird Box) so it’s recent marriage to The Roald Dahl Story Company is a perfect brand fit. Dahl’s widow, Felicity has given the deal it’s blessing stating “Our mission, which is purposefully lofty, is for as many children as possible around the world to experience the unique magic and positive message of Roald Dahl’s stories”.
The battle for our attention
Unless you have been living in a ‘ringbeller’ (look it up, it isn’t as rude as it sounds), you may have noticed that there is fierce competition in the content streaming world. Apple signed a deal with Oprah this year to ‘create original programs that embrace her incomparable ability to connect with audiences around the world’. Netflix has signed former President and First Lady, Barack and Michelle Obama for original content. Hulu disrupted the market with ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ which went on to receive the Outstanding Drama Series trophy. Amazon Prime doesn’t only offer content streaming but next day delivery and free shipping on Amazon products, plus it has its own music streaming library. Sometimes it can make your brain feel quite ‘biffsquiggled’ as to which one to choose.
But do you know the full story?
For those of you that have read all the Roald Dhal books as a child (and then to your children) that maybe thinking you know it all…you don’t. Although Netflix will be essentially remaining true to the ‘spirit and tone of Dahl’s stories’, they will be ‘building out an imaginative story universe that expands far beyond the pages of the book’. How simply splendiferous does that sound?
Another insider titbit is that the alliance between Sky and Netflix continues to grow, which recently saw Sky allowing their customers to access Netflix through Sky Q. As the competition heats up for our eyeballs, the real winner here is us lot, who don’t seem to be running out of quality TV content to binge on.
