More than three million customers could save a total of £670 million a year if they switched to a SIM only plan, according to research by Uswitch.com.

The research also revealed that out-of-contract customers could save an average of £207 a year on a contract if they switch from a pay monthly plan to a SIM only plan.

Many people don’t realise they are at the end of their contract or know what their options are for switching to a lower price plan.

Lebara came out tops for the lowest price SIM-only deal at £3.95 per month for 1GB data, 200 minutes of calls and unlimited texts.

Three was second best overall at just £16 a month for unlimited calls and texts and data. Smarty offer 60GB of data for £10 a month which includes EU roaming.

All networks have SIM only plans available, as do all the MVNOs such as Voxi, Smarty, Asda Mobile and GiffGaff.

Uswitch.com telecoms expert Ernest Doku said: “If you’re out of contract on a pay monthly deal with your mobile provider it’s important to remember that you now own your handset outright and could reduce your bill dramatically by switching to a SIM-only plan.

“Even if you’re on a ‘split deal’ where you have one plan for your handset and another for minutes, texts and data, you will find that once that ‘airtime’ contract expires, you can likely make additional savings by opting for a SIM-only deal in its place.

“If you’re not sure when your current pay-monthly deal ends, check your paperwork from your network and make a note of the end date so you’ll be ready to switch should you see a better deal.”

If you’re at the end of you contract with your mobile network, compare the latest SIM only deals and see if you can switch to a better deal.

What is a SIM Only plan?

A SIM Only plan is a monthly plan where you only pay for calls, texts and data without the cost of the hardware too (the phone). So if you’ve bought your phone outright or you’ve reached the end of your contract with your network, you can switch to a SIM only plan.

Plans are usually between 30 days and 24 months long but you’ll also find pay as you go SIM deals as well as 36 month plans.
