Talk about dedication to your phone. Not that we’d recommend doing this at all.
We’ve had some seriously cold weather here in the UK lately, but over in British Columbia ice cold water didn’t stop a local man diving into freezing water to retrieve his iPhone XS.
The man stripped down to his boxer shorts and then jumped into Victoria’s frozen Inner Harbour and swam down to retrieve his phone. He’d been taking photos at the water’s edge on Valentine’s Day, when he dropped the device.
Determined not to give up on it, he returned to the harbour the next day at low tide to retrieve the phone. It could be seen sitting at the bottom of the harbour, and after cautiously testing the water with his foot, dived on in. He resurfaced a few moments later with the iPhone in hand. Talking to Victoria Buzz; “I dropped my phone the night before,” Czarnomski said. “Then grabbed it the next day when the tide was low. It was refreshing.”
The iPhone XS is rated by Apple as having IP68 water resistance. This means it should be able to survive being submerged in 2 meters of water for us to 30 minutes. This iPhone survived a lot longer than that, in freezing temperatures – and it’s still working.

“I had a feeling it would work,” said Czarnomski. “I wasn’t really sure though until it buzzed in my pocket when the guy who took the videos sent them to me after I got out.”
