Smaller, faster, cheaper and with the same chip as an iPhone 11 Pro
There have been rumblings about a new smaller iPhone model since back in 2017, but it’s now official, the iPhone SE (2020) has been officially unveiled by Apple and it’s timing couldn’t be more perfect. In a world where we’re on lockdown and people are being more budget-conscious than perhaps ever before, Apple are launching a lower cost iPhone model, but not skimping on the spec.
The outer design is similar to that of an iPhone 8, but it’s the internals that have had the big upgrade.
The new iPhone SE is smaller than the flagship 11 and 11 Pro, with a 4.7 inch Retina HD display. However, it includes many of the features that make those models so great, including Apple’s super-powerful A13 Bionic chip. Yep, the same chip found in the iPhone 11 Pro is included in this new £419 iPhone.
The iPhone SE is water and dust resistant with an IP67 rating, which means it should be okay in water for up to 30 minutes at a depth of 1 meter. For the camera, Apple have gone with a single 12MP wide-angle lens on the back, which when combined with the A13 chip should produce some impressive results. Portrait mode is also included now which means you can create those lovely shots with the blurred background. Round the front there is a 7MP selfie camera which also supports Portrait mode.
For video, you can shoot in up to 4K.
Fast-charging and wireless charging are both supported, although you’ll probably need to purchase a fast-charging or wireless compatible charger to take advantage of those features.
The price for all this from Apple is pretty impressive and even though it may not have every single top-end spec found on the iPhone 11 Pro or Samsung Galaxy S20, this is highly likely to appeal to a lot of people right now, given it’s a more affordable option. Especially with all those that will be thinking about upgrading their iPhone 7 or 8 this year but don’t want to pay £1000 for a phone. And for those that want a great value, quality smartphone that just works, this is going to fit right in.
Pre-orders start at 1pm in the UK this Friday April 17th. We’ll have a full deal comparison round up from all the mobile networks and retailers.
