z3 vs z2Sony have launched not one but two impressive flagship smartphones this year. First up was their Xperia Z2 handset which was released in April followed by its successor the Sony Xperia Z3 smartphone which made its debut in September. We stock both handsets here at Direct Mobiles so we thought we’d write a quick guide to help you choose between the 2.

Design & Screen

At first glance you may not notice much of a difference between the Z2 and the Z3. Both are beautifully designed and high quality handsets which are befitting of their premium status. Sony have however upgraded the design of the Z3 which is slimmer, lighter and a shade smaller than the Z2. The Z3 just under a millimetre thinner than its older sibling and 11 grams lighter in weight. The Z3 and Z2 smartphones come with a similar screen which measures 5.2-inches with a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels. The Z3 display slightly pips the Z2 as it’s easier to see in bright sunlight as it has 600 nits compared to 460 nits in the Z2. Both handsets are water and dust resistant with the Z3 to IP68 standard and the Z2 to IP58.

Camera

Sony have used the same camera on the Xperia Z3 as they did with the Z2. After all the 20.7-megapixel rear camera is one of the best smartphone cameras around and it comes complete with autofocus, an LED flash and HDR. The front facing 2.2-megapixel camera is also the same.

Processor, Power and Battery

Sony are always striving to include the latest mobile technology in their smartphones so it’s no surprise that they’ve used the very latest 2.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor in the Xperia Z3. As well as being faster than the 2.3GHz chip in the Z2 it’s also significantly more efficient and helps to prolong battery life. A whopping 3GB of RAM is present in both the Z2 and Z3 and although the 3100mAh battery in the Z3 may seem less powerful than the one found in the Z2, it’s improved efficiency means that the Z3 zips along. The built-in memory on the Z2 and Z3 is a generous 16GB and both smartphones have the option to expand this up to 128GB with a microSD card.
