If you’re thinking of upgrading your iPhone or debating on whether to go for an iPhone 5s or the new iPhone 6, here’s how the two smartphones measure up.
Design & Size
The iPhone 5s is made from aluminium and has a pretty angular shape. The iPhone 6 also has an aluminium frame but is a lot more curvy, particularly at the corners. The new iPhone 6 is almost a millimetre slimmer than the 5s at 6.8mm compared to 7.6mm.
There has been much said about the display of the iPhone 6. It’s certainly superior to the iPhone 5s with a larger 4.7-inch Retina HD display and a screen resolution of 1334 x 750 (326 pixels per inch). The iPhone 5s has a 4-inch Retina 1136 x 640 display. The iPhone 6 has an improved contrast ratio 1400:1 (800:1 for the 5s) and features ‘dual-domain’ pixels for better wide angled viewing and a display zoom. Both iPhone models come in the same choice of colours.
Camera
There’s not been a huge change to the camera from the iPhone 5s to 6. Both handsets have a 8-megapixel iSight rear camera with an f/2.2 aperture. The feature which has been improved with the camera functionality is the autofocus which is now phased detection autofocus which means its much faster to focus in on the subject you’re photographing. The front-facing 1.2-megapixel camera has also been subtly upgraded with better face detection and the ability to let in 80 per cent more light as well as one-shot HDR.
Processor, Battery & Storage
As ever, Apple are always striving to improve the power and performance of their iPhone smartphones. The iPhone 6 has an A8 Chip and a M8 Motion coprocessor compared with the A7 chip and M7 coprocessor on the iPhone 5s. In terms of performance this means that the processor in the iPhone 6 is twenty per cent faster than its predecessor. The battery on the iPhone 6 is also more powerful as well as offering better efficiency, providing up to 14 hours of 3G talk time compared to 10 hours for the iPhone 5s, 11 hours of video playback (10 previously) and up to 10 hours of internet use (8 hours for the 5s).
In terms of the on-board storage the iPhone 6 comes with 3 options – 16/64/128GB of built-in memory compared with a maximum of 64GB for the iPhone 5s. Other notable upgrades for the iPhone 6 include NFC which will enable you to make wireless payments through Apple Pay and improvements to Siri, Apple’s virtual assistant.
