The rise of the Phablet has been a bit of a talking point in the mobile phone world for a little while now; they have been way more popular than most envisaged with sales anticipated to rise to almost 150 million by the end of this year. Accounting for almost one-fifth of all smartphones bought, we take a look at some of the ‘best of the biggies’ on the market.
Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3
If you think that big is definitely best then check-out this beauty. As its name suggests it features a whopping 6.3-inch screen and is only marginally smaller than a traditional tablet. The screen resolution is pretty impressive too at 1280 x 720 with a ppi of 233 and it comes complete with a hefty 3,200mAh long-lasting battery and a dual-core Snapdragon 400 1.7GHz processor. It also has up to 16GB of internal storage which can be expanded up to 64GB with a microSD and has 1.5GB of RAM.
As you can imagine, it’s a reasonable size at almost 168cms in length and with a thickness of 8mm but at less than 200 grams it is not too hefty to transport. Camera-wise the Galaxy Mega 6.3 sports an 8-megapixel rear facing camera and a 1.9-megapixel front facing camera which does the job for video-calling.

Sony Xperia Z
If you prefer your phablets a bit more compact, check-out the Sony Xperia Z smartphone. With a 5-inch ‘Bravia TV’ engineered super-sharp HD screen, the Xperia Z boasts an amazing 443ppi and superb vivid colour and weighs a fairly lightweight (for a phablet) 146 grams.
One of its great features is that it’s water resistant up to 1 metre for up to 30 minutes and also dust resistant. It’s certainly been built to last with strong tempered glass fitted with anti-shatter film and a tough polyamide shell. As you would expect from Sony the 13-megapixel camera is of a superior quality and comes with HDR (High Dynamic Range) for both photos and video which means you can take beautifully clear photos or videos whatever the lighting conditions. The Xperia Z’s powerful quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor combined with 2GB of RAM enables you to run multiple tasks and apps at the same time with super-quick download times.
