67% of people haven’t used their old phone in the last year

Research from mobile network rebel giffgaff has found that 45% of the UK have a back up phone that is rarely used, meaning there is unlocked cash sitting in people’s homes. Recycling these devices would also help reduce the UK’s tech waste.

The study showed that old and recyclable phones left in drawers across UK households could be worth up to £3.4 billion.  Trade in values for these phones could be over £100 per item.

Of the customers surveyed, 67% haven’t used their old phone in the past year and 19p%  have only used their old device once.

Over 13 million people in the UK hold onto their old phones for more than 12 months – the longer they hold onto them, the further the trade in value decreases.

Giffgaff are using the study to encourage UK businesses, networks and customers help people trade-in, recycle or gift old phones, and it has already seen double digit year-on-year growth in refurbished phone sales.

Giffgaff chief of everything Ash Schofield said: “Our latest research highlights that there’s a significant opportunity for people with an old mobile phone to make a tangible, sustainable impact, and gain some extra cash.

“And with the cost of living rising across the board, now is a great time to get something back by trading in your old phone.”
